Cristóbal Cerda-Troncoso PhD
Cell biologist – Photographer
He is a cell biologist trained in Chile and currently based in Belgium, where he is pursuing his postdoctoral research. His research focuses on membrane trafficking, autophagy, and extracellular vesicle biology, with a strong interest in understanding how cells organize their internal transport systems to communicate with other cells and adapt to stress. Through his work, he investigates how molecular pathways coordinate the degradation and unconventional secretion of proteins. His laboratory experience not only drives him to uncover new biological mechanisms but also inspires him to conceptualize complex cellular dynamics and translate them into clear graphical schemes that bridge experimental data with visual interpretation.
Influenced by the artistic tradition of the Troncoso family, he grew up closely connected to the visual arts. Cristóbal integrates his background in cell biology with a methodical approach to photographic practice. In his creative process, he moves across the boundaries between scientific observation and visual contemplation. Throughout his work, he explores the relationship between space, time, and memory through a perspective that blends documentary intention, sensitivity, surrealism and narrative flow. His practice focuses on photographic series that engage with architecture, serendipity, and the textures of urban environments.
